Obituary

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Liberty Baptist Church in the Jefferson Community of Carroll County for Mr. Code Dean Whitfield, Jr., 93, who passed away peacefully Monday, September 1, 2025 at his residence surrounded by his family.  Burial will follow in the Moore's Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Wednesday evening at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service Thursday at Liberty Baptist Church.

Mr. Whitfield was born March 12, 1932 in Carroll County to Code Dean Whitfield, Sr. and Vera Woods Whitfield.  C.D. was a graduate of Valley High School and honorably served our country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.  During his service overseas, C.D. was stationed in Austria and Germany.

C.D. married the love of his life, Nell Montgomery, and they enjoyed nearly 70 wonderful years together as husband and wife.  Mr. Whitfield worked for South Central Bell for 20 years before being elected as Sheriff of Carroll County and serving in that position for 20 years.  At the time of his death, he was the longest-serving Sheriff in Carroll County's history.

He was a Mason for over 66 years and a faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church.  An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Above all, C.D., affectionately known to his loved ones as "Gran", enjoyed any time when his family could be together.

Survivors include his wife, Nell Montgomery Whitfield; two daughters, Janice Whitfield of Jefferson and Lawana Martin(Mark) of Grenada; son, Terry Dean Whitfield(Ann) of Carroll County; sister, Shirley Hemphill of Nashville, TN; brother, Charlie Whitfield, Sr.(Mary) of Holcomb; granddaughter, Nicole Poe of Grenada; grandson, Code Alford Whitfield(Angelina) of Weaver, AL and two great-grandchildren, Walker and Riley.

C.D. was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mable Hall, Edith McCoy and Willie Merle Whitfield; brothers, Roy, Talmadge, Paul and W.C. "Bud" Whitfield; and two sons-in-law, Bea Hawkins and Charles A. Harrell.

Pallbearers will be Scott Caulder, Skipper Grantham, Mark Hemphill, Billy Whitfield, Charlie Whitfield, Jr. and Joe Whitfield.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Hayes Branscome, Frank DeLoach, Jr., William Earl DeLoach, Bobby Frazier, Bruce Heath, Cannon Kirk, T.J. Nabors, Jeff Robinson, Ken Strachan, Richard Taylor, Jim Whitfield and members of Carroll County Law Enforcement.

Memorials may be directed to the Gideons or the charity of choice.

The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to his niece, Patsy Turner, as well as the wonderful team at Accent Care Hospice for the excellent care and sincere concern shown to Mr. Whitfield during his illness.
