Long-time Grenada County Tax Assessor/Collector Charles David Melton, 81, of Grenada, passed away Sunday, August 16, 2026 at his residence. He was born May 2, 1945 in Bruce to Howard and Freda Lancaster Melton. David honorably served in the Mississippi Army National Guard for nearly 30 years. He also held the office of Tax Assessor/Collector in Grenada County for over three decades. He was well-respected among his colleagues and served as President and on the Executive Board of the IAAO. He also served as President of the Mississippi Assessor and Collector’s Association and earned the Certified General Real Estate Appraiser designation which is the highest state credential an appraiser can achieve. David was a dedicated member of the Grenada Area Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in founding the Downtown Jubilee. He also served as President of the Chamber in 2017, along with numerous terms on the Chamber Board of Directors and committee appointments which include Chamber Ambassador, Membership Committee and Christmas Parade Committee. David was also very involved in Grenada’s Christmas in April Projects as well as serving as the Financial Officer for Thunder on Water for over 28 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service with Rev. Truman D. Scarborough and Rev. Eugene Heimbach officiating. Interment will follow in the Elliott Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday evening and one hour prior to the service Wednesday all at McKibben and Guinn.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Beth Walton Melton; two daughters, Gina Melton Hood(Clay) of Gore Springs and Leslie Melton Bowie of Grenada; sister, Mary Ellen Sanders of Grenada; brother, Johnny Melton(Lisa) of Tupelo; four grandchildren, Allison Robinson, Jessica Harrison(Austin), Marti Beth Perez(Jerry) and Carson Bowie; and nine great-grandchildren, Hadley Robinson, Mary Clayton, Carley & Ella Harrison and Jack, Liam, Oakley, Parker and Sophia Perez.

David was preceded in death by his parents.
