Mrs. Edith Hurdle Jones, 97, a long-time resident of Coffeeville and widow of William Woodrow Jones, Sr., passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at her residence. She was born on March 17, 1921, in Slayden, Mississippi, to Donnie Oscar Hurdle and Cornelia Bull Hurdle. After graduating from Blue Mountain College in 1942, she began a teaching career in south Mississippi. She taught for 6 years, and, it was through some of her students, that she met the young man who would become her husband. The couple moved to Coffeeville in 1948, where she continued to make her home.
Mrs. Jones was devoted to her Lord, her family, her church and her flowers. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Coffeeville, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a wonderful mother, a loving mother-in-law, and a precious Nana to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be Sunday, May 6th, at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Coffeeville, with Rev. Truman Scarborough and Rev. Craig Baker officiating. Burial will be in Coffeeville Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 1 until 3 before the service at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service of Grenada.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 63 years, Woodrow Jones; three brothers, Simpson Hurdle, D. O. Hurdle, and a brother who died at birth; and one sister, Sallie Ray Brewer.
She leaves behind two sons and two daughters-in-law, Woody and Fran Jones of Calhoun City, and Johnny and Libby Jones of Madison; one daughter and son-in-law, Gerry and David Hood of Eupora; two grandsons, Hunter Jones and his wife Emily, and Parker Jones and his wife Allison, all of Memphis; two step-grandsons, Bradley Wilkins and his wife Whitney of Ridgeland, and Lloyd Wilkins and his wife Rachel of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three step-granddaughters, Monica Wilkins of Madison, Lauren Smith and her husband Josh of Eupora, and Anna Young and her husband Cole of Jackson; 5 great-grandchildren, William, Hazel, Eliza, Landon, and Lewis Jones; and 9 step-great-grandchildren; Rivers, JohnTyson, Walker and James Wilkins; Langston, Walter, Marla Grace, and Brister Smith; and Thomas Young.
