Gloria Helen Ellis Chamberlain, 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Grenada, MS on October 2, 2026. Gloria was born on July 28, 1933 in Houston, TX to Robert Guy Ellis and Hilda Agnes Draemar Ellis. She grew up on a small farm in Sugarland, TX, and went on to graduate from Missouri City High School in 1951. Gloria attended Draughon’s Business College before finding her first employment.
In 1952, Gloria met her late husband, Thomas Roy Chamberlain, who was serving in the Air Force at the time. The two later married on December 27, 1954. Their only child, Karen Sue Chamberlain Hipp, was born on February 7, 1961 in Houston, TX. Gloria and her family lived in Stafford, TX for a number of years, and then later moved to Fort Stockton, TX, where they lived for sixteen years. There, she worked for many years at The Pioneer Newspaper where she served as a columnist and as Lifestyle Editor.
After her husband's retirement from Intratex Gas Co. in 1986, Gloria and her family moved to her husband's hometown of Grenada, MS to build a home. She worked in Grenada for a few years at Sunburst Bank before retiring. In 1991, Gloria's only grandchild--her granddaughter, Marissa Courtney Hipp--was born.
Gloria was an active part of her community everywhere she lived. While living in Stafford, TX she was a part of the Missouri City Baptist Church. While living in Fort Stockton, TX, she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, the Girl Scouts and Junior Leaders, as well as a member of the Comanche Springs Garden Club, of which she served as president. She also joined as a member of the Extension Homemakers in the Brown Bag Club while living in Fort Stockton. When she and her family moved to Grenada, MS, she joined the Gore Springs United Methodist Church, in which Gloria served as the Cemetery Chairperson for many years. She was a member of the Gore Springs Community Club where she served on several Club Councils, and she was a charter member of the Gore Springs Bunko Club. She was also a very active member of both the Grenada County and Gore Springs Mississippi Homemakers Volunteer clubs, where she served in a number of positions including president.
Gloria is preceded in death by her parents Robert Guy Ellis and Hilda Agnes Draemar Ellis, her husband Thomas Roy Chamberlain, her daughter Karen Sue Chamberlain Hipp, her sisters-in-law Billie Williams Chamberlain and Jane Chamberlain Downs, her brothers-in-law James Ray Chamberlain Sr. and Walter Thomas Cooley Sr., as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is survived by her granddaughter Marissa Courtney Hipp and her sister-in-law Martha Grace Chamberlain Cooley, as well as many nephews- and nieces-in-law and their descendants.
A memorial service will be held at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Home on Monday October 5, 2026 at 10:30am officiated by Rev. Dr. Joey Faulk, with a visitation taking place prior to the service starting at 9:30am. Burial will be at Gore Springs Methodist Cemetery at Gore Springs Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made in her honor to Gore Springs Methodist Church or Gore Springs Methodist Cemetery, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
