On the morning of September 5, 2016, Hazel Cox Bell, age 98, went to be with the Lord, Jesus and her husband, Prather Bell, Jr.
Originally from Greene County, Tennessee, Hazel worked as a full-fashioned hosiery seamstress in her early years. She met the love of her life through letter writing during World War II. After the war, they married and moved to Grenada, Mississippi where she and Mr. Prather lived for sixty-three years.
Mrs. Bell's passion was cooking. She had always wanted to be a pastry chef, but instead became a homemaker and cooked for her husband and friends as long as she was able.
Mrs. Bell loved her church, First Baptist, in Grenada, where for many years she taught a Primary Girls' Sunday School class. She and her husband were also avid seamsters, making many of her clothes. Mrs. Bell even won prizes by entering some of her garments in the fair and Home Demonstrating Club contests.
Mrs. Bell is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lee (Jackie) Cox of Mosheim, TN and Mrs. James (Jo) Cox of Sycamore, IL; one brother-in-law, Clarence Cogdell of Greeneville, TN and a host of nieces and nephews along with many special friends, including the Cravens family from Grenada, MS.
After Mr. Prather's passing in 2009, Mrs. Hazel moved to Morristown, TN where her nephew, Tom Cox (Paula) and niece, Alice Pierce cared for her until she went to join her husband in Heaven.
The family would like to thank Lois and Arlene of Regency Retirement Center and Jane and Coleen of Heritage Nursing Center for being special friends and for loving and caring for her.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, September 9, 2016 from the Chapel of McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Grenada. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church – Grenada.
