March 5, 1938 – June 22, 2023
Mr. Henry Dean Gray, 85, of Coffeeville, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2023 at his residence. He was born March 5, 1938 in Yalobusha County to James Powell Gray and Clara Virginia Elizabeth Harrison Gray. Henry Dean spent the first 10 years of his career working as a surveyor for the Mississippi Highway Department, now known as MDOT. Following his time with the highway department, Henry Dean entered a period of his life committed to public service. First, he served for 10 years as Chief Deputy Sheriff in Yalobusha County and went on to be elected and serve for 20 years as Supervisor for Yalobusha County District 5. He was a lifelong cattle farmer, member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and honorably served in the Mississippi Army National Guard having attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and the fellowship that it brought him with other hunters. He was a founding member of the Mississippi Fox Hunters Preserve and a founding member of the Magnum Hunting Club, both of which he served in numerous capacities.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 25, 2023 at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Truman Scarborough officiating. Interment will follow in the Gray family plot in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Saturday evening at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service Sunday at Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Deana Gray(Shurden Owen) of Coffeeville; son, Gaylon Gray(Lisa) of Coffeeville; two sisters, Betty Tritt and Shirley Edwards(James), both of Coffeeville; and a granddaughter, Novie Claire Gray.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James William Gray.
Harry "Butch" Eubank, Darren Harrison, Joe Hood, Alton Strider, Buddy Adams, Carl Ray Upchurch, Fuzzy Clark and Charles Liles will honor Henry Dean by serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Mississippi Fox Hunters Association and former county officials and employees that Henry Dean served with through the years.
