Mrs. Janie Elizabeth Thornton Ashley, 89, of Grenada, passed away Monday, October 11, 2021 at her residence.  She was born July 23, 1932 in Utica to Henry Eugene and Mary Louise Jones Thornton.  Mrs. Ashley had worked for many years at the North Mississippi Conference Council of Ministries of the United Methodist Church.  She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Grenada where she taught Discipleship classes and sang in the choir.  Janie was also a founding member of the Grenada Soup Kitchen.  She loved to read and was a master seamstress.  She will fondly be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother for many years to come.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:00 PM Friday, October 15, 2021 at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service.  A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the Ashley Family Cemetery near Crosby, MS with Rev. Daniel Herring officiating.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, John Ashley; one daughter, Pamela Anne Ashley Chandler(Mike) of Grenada; two sons, Donald Ray Ashley, Sr.(Brenda) of Jasper, AL and Jon Stephen Ashley(Pat) of Oxford; and six grandchildren, Phillip Michael Chandler, Donald Ray Ashley, Jr., John Thornton Ashley, Amanda Leigh Ashley, Stephanie Elizabeth Ashley and Mallory Magen Chandler McCormack.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Percy Eugene Thornton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Music Ministry at First United Methodist Church – Grenada or to the Grenada Soup Kitchen.
