Obituary

Rev. John Curtis Hubbard

John Curtis Hubbard, 86, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at his home in Grenada, MS.  He leaves his wife of 65 years, Norma Lee (Davidson) Hubbard; two daughters, Linda Lee Little of Boulder, CO and Judy Flanagan (husband, Randy Jones) Jones of West Point, MS; one son, Terry Wayne Hubbard of Nashville, TN; four grandsons, Jason (wife, Sonja) of Berlin, Germany, Joshua, Jeffrey, and Jake Flanagan of Austin, TX; and three great grandchildren, Tyler, Caylee, and Julie Flanagan of Berlin, Germany.  Another son, Stephen Curtis Hubbard, at age 27, preceded him in death.

J.C., as he was known by his friends, was the son of Aulbra Curtis Hubbard and Addie Ilene (Sims) Hubbard.  His only sibling was a brother, William Murray Hubbard, with whom he developed a love for the outdoors, spending his out-of-school hours and weekends hunting and fishing.  After graduating from Grenada High School, he continued his education at Wood Jr. College in Mathiston, MS, where he met and married his wife, Norma.  It was also there that he committed his life to God as a minister of the Gospel in the Methodist Church.  Upon graduating from the University of Mississippi and Vanderbilt University, he completed 56 years of service in pastoral appointments (most in north Mississippi):  Bellefontaine, Abbeville, Pleasant Hill, Hustburg, TN, East End in Nashville, TN (as a student at Vanderbilt Divinity School), Weir, Lambert, Cleveland, Drew, Holly Springs, Indianola, Grenada, and as District Superintendent of the Cleveland District.  Upon retirement from the active ministry, he served one year as a retired supply pastor at Hollandale and 9½ years as Sta-Home Hospice Chaplain in the Grenada area.

He was a pilot, an avid golfer and fisherman, and enjoyed woodworking, but his love was always for people and he continued to fill pulpits and serve in many capacities until about six months before his death.  Sometimes he shared how God took a poor country boy, so timid that he would take a zero in class rather than stand before his classmates and recite a poem assignment, and gave him the courage to stand before a crowd and preach.  He never failed to give God credit for allowing him the joy of serving.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 29, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Grenada.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until service time Saturday at the church.  The committal service will be held at 4:30 PM Saturday at the Indianola City Cemetery.
