Jim Eli Garrett,III, teacher and journalist, died on Saturday, April 4, 2015, in Tucson, Arizona at the age of 52. He was born in Jackson, MS to Dallygene Bailey Reeves and Jim Eli Garrett, Jr.
He graduated from Pillow Academy in Greenwood, MS, attended Mississippi Delta Community College on a band scholarship and graduated from Delta State University in Cleveland, Ms.
He was a member of Delta Iota Chapter of Lambda Iota Tau, an international honor society in Literature. An avid reader, he pursued a lifelong interest in the Bible, literature, and history, with some published works.
After graduating college, he began a teaching career and eventually became a journalist with the Bolivar Commercial in Cleveland, MS, the Daily Star in Hammond, La, and an editor of a small weekly publication in Alabama.
Jim E, as he was affectionately known, was the epitome of a southern gentleman with a quiet demeanor with manners and respect for the elderly and a knack for exchanging stories with his family and friends.
His desire for retirement was to live in the Delta, sit on the front porch with his dog, drink tea, and enjoy the beauty he saw in God's firmament.
He was predeceased by his father, Jim Garrett, Jr, and his grandparents Eli and Alpha Mae Garrett and Robert Houston Bailey. He leaves his son, Jackson Eli Garrett of Birmingham, Alabama; his mother, Dallygene Bailey Reeves; his grandmother, Martha Goodson Clark; and his sister, Gaye Garrett Montgomery, all of her Hernando, MS and a sister, Mignon Clark Backstrom of Owensboro, KY. Also nephews, Brown Backstrom and Andrew Jenkins, and nieces, Dallie Davis and Kari Backstrom.
Visitation will be at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada, MS on Saturday, April 11th at 1:00pm with funeral services at 2:00pm, followed by interment at Holcomb Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will be held afterwards at Holcomb Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Holcomb, MS.
Pallbearers are Dennis Carver, Andrew Jenkins, Greg Bloom, Barry Campbell, Bryan Long, and Jimmy Ward.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Holcomb Baptist Church in honor of his grandmother, Martha Goodson Clark.
