Obituary

John Wesley Barnett, Jr. was born on December 30, 1953 to John Wesley, Sr. and Rosemarie Long Barnett. John grew up in the Mississippi Delta where he was taught his tremendous work ethic working on the farm of his beloved grandparents Edward and Frances Dyess. He proudly served in the US Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS America. After the Navy, John had a long career in management in the paper industry in engineering, production and sales.
John was a passionate person who believed in enjoying life to the fullest. He learned to fly, soloed and obtained his pilots license. He loved to sail especially on his beloved sailboat the "Vitamin Sea". John was an avid hunter and eventually, at the insistence of his wife, learned to love fishing. But his main passion was riding motorcycles. He earned his Iron Butt designation by riding over 1000 miles in one day and made the annual pilgrimage several times to Sturgis. His enthusiasm for riding was contagious persuading several people to take up riding themselves including his wife. He combined his love of riding with his love for God and founded the Circuit Riders, a motorcycle group at his beloved Beulah United Methodist Church in Gilbert, SC.
John passed away peacefully at home on November 21, 2017 from Glioblastoma Multiforme, the most aggressive type of brain cancer. He had a lot more on his bucket list to accomplish but said if you died having nothing left on your list, it wasn't much of a list anyway.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years Elissa Brewer Barnett, his beloved son and daughter-in-law, Trey (John III) and Tiffany Barnett and his precious granddaughters, Reagan Elizabeth and Emma Grace Barnett all of Katy, Texas.
Also surviving are his siblings, Bill (Betty) Lee of Alachua, Florida, May Frances Barnett of Grenada, MS, Vicki Barnett (Nick) of Kenner, LA and Edwardanne (William Earl) McCammon of Charleston, MS. His brothers and sister in law, James (Elois) Brewer of Charleston, MS, Joe (Debbie) Brewer of Grenada, MS and Cathy (Arnie) McMullen of Ashland, MS as well as his beloved nieces and nephews whom 'Uncle John' doted on and who doted on him.
John received love and support from so many during his illness. A special thank you to his church family at Beulah United Methodist Church especially his Bible study class who continued to include him long distance after he moved to Texas for treatment; his motorcycle buddies who regularly called, visited and texted as well as his many former co-workers too numerous to name.
John lived a blessed life.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Beulah United Methodist Church Youth Ministry, 161 Beulah Church Rd, Gilbert, SC 29054 .
Isaiah 41:13 For I am the Lord your God, who takes hold of your right hand, and says to you, Do not fear. I will help you.
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "WOW - What a Ride!"

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, November 25, 2017 at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the Paul Cemetery in Tallahatchie County. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until service time Saturday at McKibben and Guinn.
