IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marguerite
Burkley
September 8, 1918 – September 8, 2018
Marguerite Finney Burkley, 100 years old, began her birthday celebration at Grenada Rehab and Healthcare Center, September 8, 2018. During that afternoon, Marguerite, affectionately known as Marge, took the celebration to her heavenly home. Marguerite was born on September 8, 1918 in Canton, Mississippi. She graduated from Grenada High School and attended Grenada College. Marge worked at South Central Bell Telephone Company and worked 20 years with the Grenada School District as a secretary, teacher assistant, and library assistant. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder and a Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include one son, Earle Burkley, Jr., of Jackson, Mississippi and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, and great-great nephews.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, Earle Burkley, Sr., her parents, Albert Raymond Finney and Annie Lindsey Lavender Finney, her sisters, Sara Neely, Bessie Mae Heath, Anna Rose Poole, Billie Townes, Mary Cutler, and one brother, George Finney.
A true Southern lady, Marguerite was well respected and loved in Grenada. Marge grew up on Glenwild Plantation, where her father was the caretaker of the 600 acre plantation, south of Grenada. Marge was well known for being an avid bridge player and taught many people how to play bridge. She loved to entertain with family and friends. Marguerite was very involved in her church and is especially remembered for bringing unchurched children to Sunday School. Marge's secret to longevity was pray every day, laugh every day, and keep plenty of young friends around.
