Mary Hunter Jones Carlton, age 83, of Oxford, MS died August 20, 2018 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Mrs. Carlton was a longtime resident of Grenada until she moved to Oxford in 2003 following her husbands retirement. Arrangements are under the care of McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service, Grenada, MS. Visitation will commence at 1 PM Saturday, August 25, 2018 followed by chapel services at 2 PM. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery on US Highway 51, Grenada, MS. Her niece, Reverend Vanessa Jean Falgoust will officiate the service.
Mary was born Dec 9, 1934 in Leflore County, MS to Mary Cathron (sometimes spelled Catherine) and Hinds L. Jones. She was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Grenada in 1946 by Dr. Wiley. She lived briefly at LSU and after marrying at the age of 18, she lived in Memphis, Fort Benning and Starkville where she held several jobs including working as a licensed hairdresser. She was a devoted homemaker and loved all things beautiful including art, furniture design, and later in life writing. She gave her time and assistance to those in need over a period of many years. She leaves her beloved son, David Curtis Carlton and his wife Cheryl Pittman Carlton of Carlsbad, CA; and her loving nieces Margaret Falgoust Clifton Koehler of Alexandria, LA; Barbara Falgoust Mennite of Highland Falls, NY; and Vanessa Jean Falgoust of Newburgh, NY. Her nephews are Roger and Marcel Ponce of TX.
Mrs. Mary Carlton was preceded in death by her parents; her infant son, Kenneth Curtis Carlton who was born in Memphis in Feb 1960; her husband of 65 years, Eris Curtis Carlton; and her sisters, Lillian Jones Ponce, and Juanita Elizabeth Jones Falgoust.
