Obituary

Mrs. O'Vera Pharr Smith Bennett, age 96, of Meridian, MS, passed away Monday morning, June 29, 2020.

She was born in Air Mount, MS on June 26, 1924 to David and Myrtle Pharr and lived most of her adult life in Grenada.

As a young woman she worked for the hosiery mill in Grenada, and those early experiences echoed throughout her life. She enjoyed interacting with the community through sewing, tailoring new suits and Easter dresses. She retired as a nurse at the Care Inn in Grenada.  Later in life she met her husband Harvey Lee "Nick" Bennett, who worked at the same hosiery mill. She was a loving mother and grandmother. While in Grenada, she was an active member of First United Methodist Church and volunteered in area nursing homes.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Harvey Lee "Nick" Bennett of Duck Hill (died 2003); her first husband Palmer Smith (died 1970) and a son Johnny Smith; 4 brothers, Benny Pharr, Edward Pharr, Sherman Pharr and Alverton Pharr; and 3 sisters, Christine Pharr, Melinda Pharr and Rebel Connors.

She is survived by one grandson, Austin Smith (Mary Margaret) of Memphis; one great-granddaughter, Eleanor; 2 sisters, Maxine Castle and Aline McCary; 1 brother, James Pharr; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, July 3, 2020 at Woodlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Daniel Herring of First United Methodist Church - Grenada officiating.

Memorials may be made in her memory to First United Methodist Church of Grenada.
