Obituary

Peggy Ruth Evans Harbin, 82, of Grenada, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018, at her family home after a brief illness.

Peggy was born in Memphis, Tennessee on March 4, 1936. She was the daughter of Frank Albert Evans and Patsy Mohon Evans who settled in Grenada in 1937 to manage the Western Auto Stores of Grenada and Oxford; and later started Grenada Video Inc., the first cable television company in Grenada.

Peggy was a 1954 graduate of John Rundle High School. She attended Blue Mountain College, then the University of Mississippi where she met her husband of almost 62 years, Leon C. 'Buddy' Harbin, Jr., who played football with Coach John Vaught's Rebels. Peggy finished at Ole Miss with a Bachelors Degree of Education with double-majors in History and English; and later two Masters Degrees in Guidance Counseling and Library Science.

Peggy was a natural educator, teacher, and mentor. Her love for books and reading started at an early age and continued her whole life. She was a regular visitor to the Elizabeth Jones Library where everyone knew her and loved her enthusiasm for education. During the early 1980s, she was the librarian at Kirk Academy.

Peggy was a member of First Baptist Church of Grenada, where she worked in the church library, taught Sunday school and Bible studies, was active with the Women's Ministry, prayed with the Intercessory Prayer Ministry, and in her youth played the piano and organ. Peggy was known as a dedicated prayer warrior. Family and friends often said when you have been prayed for by Peggy Harbin, then you are good to go.

Most important to Peggy was her love for her Savior, Jesus Christ. She loved studying and teaching God's word which led her to join Bible Study Fellowship as a teaching leader with some classes as large as 300 students. Peggy was a biblical scholar with a history background which helped her bring the scriptures alive for the many people she taught. She had a particular love for teaching younger Christian women, so they might share His word with the next generation.

Peggy leaves behind her beloved family, husband Buddy, and their three children; son Lee Harbin of Fredericksburg, TX, daughter Patti Harbin Hernandez (Mike) of Grenada, and son Frank Harbin (Sharolyne) of Grenada; grandchildren Dane Harbin, Zack Harbin (Chelsey), Cody Harbin (Elia), and Chesney Harbin Dunning (Gage). She is also survived by five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 1, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Grenada.  Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Friday evening and one hour prior to the service Saturday all at First Baptist Church - Grenada.

Pallbearers will be Tom Carroll, Bill Daly, Gage Dunning, Ray Freeman, Cody Harbin, Dane Harbin, Zack Harbin, Mike Hernandez, Dr. Bruce Longest, Dr. Jamie Stanford, Josh Stanford, Wesley Thomas, and Billy Woods.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Grenada, Hebron Baptist Church of Grenada, 20:20 Ministries of Woodville, AL, or the charity of one's choice.
