Obituary

Sue Nelson Callaway Gard graduated from Grenada High School in 1946 and had a full scholarship in music at Delta State, but decided this was not the direction she wanted to go and came back to Grenada and went to nursing school, and began nursing school at a home behind the original First Baptist Church that Dr. Avent organized.

After graduation and working as a nurse, she went to Nurse Anesthetist School in New Orleans in 1962 where she graduated and returned back to Grenada.  She was the first nurse anesthetist at Grenada Hospital and worked there many years.  She then worked as a nurse anesthetist at Bolivar County Hospital for several years and at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS.

She lived for a while in North Carolina where she managed a sewing center and another one in Boca Raton, Florida, she truly enjoyed sewing and quilting and was very good at it.

She came back to Grenada and returned as the Director of Nursing in Winona then as Director of Nursing at the Golden Age Nursing Home in Greenwood.  She met some lifelong friends at Golden Age and they would call her all the time to check on her.  One of her co-workers was quoted as saying "She was a true professional and a champion nurse.  Each day she worked to provide the best care for her residents.  She brought a bright ray of sunshine to each resident and we all loved to work with her."

After all the years of nursing she liked to keep busy so she helped at Mid-South Produce managing the market for 2 years and then retired all together, after which she married Dr. Paul Gard and loved working in the yard and staying busy living life and enjoying going places.

Her father and mother had a Dry Goods and Grocery Store in Grenada and later, her mother had a small store on Poplar Street known as "Mrs. Callaway's".  The students from John Rundle High School would come by and get cokes and candy.  Her great-grandfather, Rev. James Render Callaway, and his son, were instrumental in starting the Methodist Church in Oxford and supported the Summer Methodist camps in the Oxford Community.  They also helped develop ways to farm and care for sweet potatoes and donated some of the land Ole Miss sits on today.

She always enjoyed people coming to visit.  She did not miss a college football game for years, usually starting to watch at 10:00 AM on Saturdays and continuing to watch all day – even past 10:00 PM.  Sue always had food prepared for the games and would "tailgate" in the den.  She could tell you the players and coaches' names and what they have accomplished and always had a schedule of all of the games including bowl games.  She also enjoyed watching westerns and would watch "Gunsmoke" until nearly midnight.  Sue always enjoyed listening to the news and stayed on top of every event. Sue always had pets and cared and talked with them like children.

She loved life and always enjoyed a funny.  Being a nurse for so many years, she always kept everything in its' place and in the original box it came in, always organized, she could tell you where every document and fork was.

She was very strong in her beliefs and once she made up her mind – that was it – she was not going to budge...

She loved the Lord deeply and prayed for everyone and over every meal. When she reached a point where she could not attend church, she watched a number services on TV every Sunday making sure to follow along in her Bible.  Sue truly enjoyed living life and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her son, Will White(Cynthia) of Grenada; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service to celebrate her life will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, January 29, 2021 at the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Grenada.
